Urban Football Academy Applications Open 1 September 2026 for January 2027 Intake

Urban Football Academy (UFA) is pleased to announce that applications and registrations for the January 2027 intake will officially open on 1 September 2026.

This marks an important milestone in the Academy's development as UFA prepares to welcome its first full intake of players into a structured, high-performance football development environment built around long-term player growth, professional standards, a program, and a clear developmental pathway.

The January 2027 intake will be the beginning of a new chapter for young footballers who are looking for more than simply another team to play for. UFA has been established to create an environment in which players can be developed systematically over time, with greater attention given to technical ability, tactical understanding, physical development, discipline, football intelligence and the demands associated with progression into higher levels of the game. Applications will open on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, with successful applicants preparing to enter the Academy program from January 2027.

The Academy will operate across structured age-group development phases and will provide players with an opportunity to develop within a football philosophy designed to create continuity as they progress through the system. Rather than treating each team or age group as a separate program, UFA is being built around a connected developmental pathway in which players are gradually introduced to increasingly advanced football concepts as they mature.

The objective is to create an environment where a player’s development is measured not only by the result of the next match, but by what that player is becoming over a period of years.

A Serious Environment for Serious Development

Urban Football Academy has been established with a clear understanding that talent alone is not enough to prepare a player for high-performance football.

Young footballers require quality coaching, appropriate competition, consistency, discipline and an environment that challenges them to improve. They need to understand the game technically and tactically, learn how to make better decisions under pressure and gradually become comfortable with the expectations that exist in more demanding football environments.

For this reason, the Academy program will place significant emphasis on individual development alongside team performance.

Players will be expected to take ownership of their development, maintain high standards in training and competition and understand that progress requires consistency. The Academy will in turn provide a structured framework through which that progress can be monitored, supported and challenged.

UFA is not being created simply to collect talented players and enter competitions. The intention is to establish a genuine developmental structure with a clearly defined football methodology and long-term vision.

Football Development Under Experienced Leadership

The opening of applications follows another major development for the Academy: the appointment of internationally experienced UEFA Pro License coach Ernst Middendorp as Academy Director.

Middendorp brings decades of professional coaching experience across South Africa and international football and will play an important role in helping shape UFA’s football philosophy, coaching methodology and technical standards.

His involvement is particularly significant because the Academy’s purpose is not merely to produce successful youth teams. UFA wants to develop players who progressively understand the demands of football beyond their current age group and who are exposed, from a young age, to principles that will become increasingly important as the level of competition rises.

The presence of experienced football leadership within the Academy will also contribute towards coach development, player evaluation and the implementation of consistent football principles across the different age groups. This means that players entering UFA in January 2027 will become part of a program being deliberately structured around development rather than short-term results.

A Clear Pathway for Young Players

One of the central principles behind Urban Football Academy is the creation of a clear pathway through which players can progress.

The Academy will cater for young footballers across its developmental age groups, with players moving through increasingly demanding phases of technical, tactical and physical preparation.

Each stage of the program will have a developmental purpose. Younger players will require strong technical foundations, confidence on the ball and an understanding of fundamental football principles. As players grow older, tactical detail, positional responsibility, physical preparation, decision-making and performance expectations will become increasingly important.

The long-term objective is to reduce the gap that often exists between youth football and the higher levels of the game.

For players with the ability, commitment and potential to progress further, UFA intends to create an environment that prepares them as thoroughly as possible for the opportunities that may become available to them.

At the same time, the Academy will remain grounded in responsible player development. UFA will never promise professional contracts or guarantee that every player will reach professional football. What the Academy can commit to is creating a structured environment in which players are given an opportunity to develop under serious football standards.

Education Remains Part of the Development Journey

Urban Football Academy also recognizes that young athletes remain students, sons, daughters and developing individuals before they are footballers.

For this reason, education and personal development remain important components of the wider UFA philosophy.

Through its educational partnership with Urban Academy Private School, the Academy seeks to promote a culture in which academic responsibility and football development support one another rather than compete against each other.

Players will therefore be expected to understand that discipline off the field is as important as discipline on it.

Punctuality, respect, personal conduct, accountability, commitment and a willingness to learn will form part of the standards expected from every player entering the program.

UFA wants to develop capable footballers, but it also wants to contribute towards developing responsible young people.

Applications Open 1 September 2026

From 1 September 2026, prospective players and their families will be able to begin the formal application and registration process for the Academy’s January 2027 intake.

Because UFA intends to maintain appropriate player numbers within its developmental groups, places within the Academy will be managed carefully. Applications should therefore not be viewed as an automatic guarantee of placement. The purpose of the application process is to allow the Academy to understand each prospective player, determine the most appropriate developmental environment and manage the quality and capacity of the program responsibly.

Families who believe their child is ready to enter a more structured and demanding football environment are encouraged to apply once applications officially open.

January 2027: The Beginning of the Journey

The opening of applications represents more than the start of a registration period.
